Description

In July and August 2004 York Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological watching brief on an approx. 85m stretch of the York City walls during the temporary removal of the stone paving slabs, the demolition of the intemal brick jack arches and the clearance of rubble from the base of the void between the two walls. This work enabled the insertion of steel bars which tied the curtain wall and the inner wall together. The work was located between Chainages 822-906 (NGR SE 596 515). All of the extant fabric of the city walls was found to be 191 century and all deposits observed between the two walls appeared to be modem.
