This former railway arch, which punctures the City Wall between Tower 17 and Barker Tower, now bridges the highway on Station Road. It is a busy route into and out of the city centre for pedestrians using the railway station and also carries traffic into the city. The arch was altered in the early twentieth century to allow trams to pass underneath and was completely dismantled in the 1960s before being rebuilt in stone-clad steel. In recent years, some of the cladding stones showed signs of failure and were repaired or replaced in 2021.
