In 2019/20 monitoring and investigations concluded that an interval tower, known as Tower Two, was in poor condition and required structural intervention. The weight of the material used to fill in the tower in the eighteenth or nineteenth century to create the walkway was bearing against the tower wall, causing progressive cracking. Removing the fill material help to stabilise the tower, and also provided an opportunity to undertake archaeological research. With the fill material removed and progressive cracking significantly slowed, the tower was partially dismantled before being rebuilt without cracks in the masonry. A new walkway, allowing wall walkers to see the construction phases of the city walls as well as the top of the rampart, has been designed and will soon be installed.
