Description

watching brief, four probe holes, five test pits A watching brief consisting of a series of four probe holes and five trial pits were observed prior to the proposed alterations to warehouses that stand on this site. The probe holes were cored down to natural boulder clay at a depth of between 8.5 and 10 metres with each distinct deposit layer recorded and given a context number. The trial pits were excavated by hand and all were fairly shallow and restricted to the investigation of the foundations belonging to the brick walls of the standing 19th century buildings fronting that of King Street. In all well preserved organic deposits thought to date between that of the Roman and post medieval period were observed. In general it was found that deep well stratified and indeed waterlogged deposits survive on this site. The dates given were from the Roman period through to the post medieval with later medieval deposits occuring at a depth of 2 metres below the modern ground level.
