Abstract/Summary

The evaluaiton of two trenches (2mx2m) excavated to a maximum depth of 1.45m, identified a sequence from the natural geology to modern deposits. The earliest evidence was a Roman ditch and plough soil. This rural agricultural landscape continued through the medieval period characterised by thick, well developed plough soils. Intensificaiton of the land use began in the 19th century associated with the creation of the cattle market and wool market. All upper deposits in both trenches were associated with modern activity.
