14 The Shambles. An early 19th century shop and house, incorporating the remains of an earlier timber framed building. The building was altered and extended in the 20th century and is now part of a restaurant.

Full Description

House, now part of restaurant. Early C19, incorporating elements of earlier structure; C20 alteration and extension. Timber-framed, fronted in orange-brown brick in Flemish bond with timber shop window; brick stack to tiled roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys and attic; 1-window front. Shopfront has glazed and panelled door and 3-light transomed window. First floor window is 16-pane sash with painted sill and painted channelled wedge lintel. Attic window is flat-topped dormer with 2-light casement. INTERIOR: ground floor rooms fitted with C20 incised panelling. Timber-frame much altered with exposed joists and a stud partition wall. Probably C17 and originally timber framed but much altered and
restored. Two storeys plus attic; faced with early C19 brick; one
sash window with channelled lintel; plain eaves; one dormer.
Part of the original open stall is incorporated in the shop
front with wood canopy above. (RCHM Vol V, Monument 426).
