NMR Information:

A Roman road is visible as cropmarks on air photographs, south of the
village of Stamford Bridge. It extends in a east-west direction for
1.5 kilometres, either side of the River Derwent (SE 6992 5433 to
SE 7145 5467), but is not visible directly adjacent to the river,
where alluvium is probably masking the road. The crossing or fording
point therefore is conjectured by projecting the visible sections of
road. The road has a branch (SE 7072 5459 to SE 7095 5484) which
trends north-eastward for 350 metres. The roads are defined by two
parallel ditches, but in some places a double ditch is visible and an
agger. A road-side settlement associated with the roads is recordedin SE 75 SW 45.

Air photographs taken in 2006 show a possible easterly extension of the road described above showing as cropmarks. Parallel ditches defining the road are visible at SE 7151 5467, they continue the east-west orientation of the road initially, but then appear to curve to the south. Further ditches are visible lying perpendicular to the road, probably representing an extension to the roadside settlement. (4-5)
