Monument record MYO2024 - Roman Camp 1 Huntington South Moor

Summary

A Roman camp visible as soilmarks on aerial photographs. Parts of four-sides of a rectangular enclosure defined by a bank and ditch are visible including one rounded corner and a possible clavicula entrance. There are two other known Roman Camps on the periphery of York, at Bootham Stray approximately 3km to the west of Monk.s Cross (RCHMY1, 47). These camps are fairly closely spaced and of broadly similar size and morphology. Seven or eight. Camps in the York area were noted by Francis Drake in an annotation on p.37 of his own copy of .Eboracum. (1736). It may be that the known Monks Cross and Bootham Stray camps form some of those to which Drake referred.

Full Description

NMR Information:

Aerial photographs taken on 13-MAR-2002 show soilmarks of a rectangular enclosure (internally 123m x 108m) aligned NW-SE. A curved corner and a possible clavicula entrance aid the interpretation of this as a Roman temporary camp. The site may be that of one of the eight camps to the north of York alluded to by antiquarian writers, others have been identified at Bootham Stray (SE 55 SE 19 and 66). A corner of an earthwork to the north-west may be another camp (SE 65 SW 386). (1)

The probable Roman camp described by the previous authority was mapped from further aerial photographs taken on 27-MAR-2002 as part of English Heritage aerial reconnaissance. The camp is centred at SE 6235 5457 and measures approximately 130m x 113m. A large portion of the western corner and a small part of the southern corner could not be seen. (2)
