Summary

Timber-framed house. c1500 with C16 extension to left; encased in brick and extended to right c1700; further alteration and extensions in C19 and later; C20 fenestration. 2-storey 2-bay front with 1-storey 1-bay extension at right and further lean-to extensions at right end. Description and condition have been updated as part of the Acomb Buildings Survey. Attached sketch shows 16 Front Street in the back right corner with 14 Front Street as the main focus.

Full Description

House. c1500 with C16 extension to left; encased in brick and extended to right c1700; further alteration and extensions in C19 and later; C20 fenestration. MATERIALS: original structure is timber-framed, encased and extended in orange-brown brick in stretcher bond on brick plinth, most now rendered but some exposed at rear of right wing; pantile roof, part hipped, with stone copings, brick stacks and moulded timber guttering at front. Timber porch with tile roof. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 2-bay front with 1-storey 1-bay extension at right and further lean-to extensions at right end. Gabled latticed porch has C20 panelled door at right end of 2-storey front. All front windows are small-paned with top-hung opening lights, that to 1-storey extension slightly bowed. Rear: windows similar to those on main front. Part has 2-course raised brick band at first floor level. Left return: tall external stack with offsets and weathering. INTERIOR: some timber-framing is visible through later wall coverings. End room at right has chamfered and ogee stopped spine beam and exposed joists. Two fireplaces survive, one of marble in left end room on ground floor, the other with cast-iron grate and tiled slips in the middle room in the centre range. Attic door to C18 extension is of 2 panels on plank backing hung on H- and L-hinges. (RCHME: City of York: South-west of the Ouse: HMSO: 1972-: 112).

T-shape plan. 2 storeys. Previously attached to Manor House. Yorkshire sashes, horizontal sashes and casement (timber non-original). Pantile roof. Cement render. Interior significantly altered in 1990s. Original fireplaces now stored in basement. Current use: Dental Practice. Condition: Overall fair. Some warping of walls. Two wall ties to NE elevation suggest historic structural issues.Timber windows recently replaced with conservation standard single-glazed units.
