Description

The underlying geology of the site was found to vary considerably in terms of depth and composition. Glacial sands and clays were observed at a shallow depth in the south-western end of the site, while evidence of a possible kettle hole containing organic material was identified to the north-east. Archaeological deposits were principally associated with the remains of substantial fitting sheds that occupied much of the site until the mid-20th century. Alongside substantial wall footings, intact floor surfaces and inspection pits were also observed. Re-deposited Roman ceramics were recovered from a series of 19th century makeup deposits.
