Title York Station Frontage
Author/Originator
Date/Year 2021

Abstract/Summary

Underlying geology was observed at just 0.65m BGL (12.71m AOD) at the site’s western end but was located at 3.60m BGL (9.53m BGL) to the east. The present ground level in the west of the site sits around 13.36m AOD and at around 13.13m AOD to the east, therefore the historic slope to the south and east has been entirely infilled. As seen in ATP202, this terracing process may have entirely removed the archaeological horizon in the western end of the site, however, the level of preservation to the east may be very good as a result of being protected by the deposition of metres of overburden in the 19th century. The 19th century remains associated with the railways are clearly well-preserved and of inherent interest in themselves as the numerous instances of adaptations and alterations to the buildings demonstrate some stratigraphic complexity. 2020 interim report superceeded by 2021/30
