Description

A total of eight test pits were excavated to investigate form differences, rampart deposits, and cracks in the façade of the City Walls. Upper rampart deposits were encountered in all trenches. The form of the City Walls and their respective footings were varied across the test pits. Where the City Wall is most structurally sound the footings were primarily foundation arches. Areas with plinth foundations (Test Pit 6), alterations, such as 19th century (Test Pit 4), and modern underpinning (Test Pit 3); or where Towers are bonded were significantly weaker.
