Description

In this stretch of the city walls, three facing stones are reused architectural fragments. All the stone appear to be 12th century voussoirs with chevron (zig-zag) ornamentation. Stones 1/3 and 3/3 are of very similar dimensions and design, with a boldly carved chevron containing a plain ball, and moulding (as opposed to carved) detail on the bottom, in the form of two rolls. Stone 1/3 also has a mouldingat the top: three rolls separated by hollows, all in shallow relief. On stone 3/3, the triple roll is on the chevron. In addition, between the bottom two rolls is a possible line of nailhead decoration, now much eroded. Both of these stones probably belong to the later half of the 12th century. It is impossible to say whether they are from a doorway of many orders or from a more humble arch. Stone 2/3 probably also dates to 1150-1200, and bears a chevron in shallow relief, incorporating a band of nailhead design. Though not visible because of the position of the stone in the wall, the design probably continued round the bottom of the chevron, leading to another recessed order of the same arch NMR Information Watching Brief: trial hole dug against the buttresses at chainage 1681.8 (SE 6013 5224) Report includes a series of watching briefs carried out at a separate sites along York city walls: two small trial holes dug against the buttresses at chainage 693.1 (SE 5974 5148) and 1681.8 (SE 6013 5224) (see also Event 1319668); and repair to a 48m long section of wall of at chainage 2167-2215 (SE 6050 5229).
