Description
City walls, buttress at chainage 693.1 , Trial hole located 11. 70m north-west of Micklegate Bar, within the angle between wall and buttress, measured0.60m x 0.70m and 0.68m deep. The base of the foundations of the rampart wall was 0.30m below the surface of the rampart. The base of the buttress, projecting some 0.67m at this point, was at the same depth, except for a 0.20m wide heel on its outer edge whichwent down to 0.50m below the top of the rampart level. The material within the trench consisted of a single consistent layer of very friable brown sandy silt with occasional pebbles and bone. Two pieces of 14th century pottery were recovered from the
lower half of the excavation.

Report includes a series of watching briefs carried out at a separate sites along York city walls: two small trial holes dug against the buttresses at chainage 693.1 (SE 5974 5148) and 1681.8 (SE 6013 5224) (see also Event 1319668); and repair to a 48m long section of wall of at chainage 2167-2215 (SE 6050 5229).
