Description

Desk based assessment has identified no evidence for pre-medieval activity in the immediate vicinity of the site 1.5km from the site a number of nationally important Roman temporary camps have been identified. One of these was excavated to reveal prehistoric activity underlying the fort. Evidence for the medieval and later periods appears to be limited to agricultural and transportation activity with ridge and furrow indicating that medieval ploughing took place over much of the site and evidence for post~medieval roads~ canals and railways nearby. It is considered unlikely that any medieval or later activity will exist on this site of more than local significance~ However~ at present it is uncertain whether any Roman or earlier activity may have taken place~ As such~ a programme of geophysical survey is recommended to better establish the extent of the features visible as cropmark and to allow a programme of trial trench evaluation to be drawn up~
