Description

On 29th September 2015, York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief at 17 Tadcaster Road, Copmanthorpe, York. The objective was to record any deposits, features or buried structures exposed during works associated with the opening of trenches for the foundations of a garage between the current residence and the main road (Tadcaster Road). Further works are included in the planning condition and are scheduled for next year, when archaeological monitoring will resume. The topsoil is fairly clean though extensively permeated by tree roots to the west. The subsoil shows no sign of human disturbance. The course of the Roman road between York and Tadcaster is presumed to approximate to the current line of Tadcaster Road, which passes the site around 15m down slope to the north. There is no evidence of activity associated with this road and no deposits of archaeological interest were disturbed by the groundwork.
