Description

An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on land at 23 Hospital Fields Road, York during groundworks for the construction of an office block. The course of a probable boundary ditch was identified on a north-east to south-west alignment through the development site. Although of likely medieval date, the ditch also produced earlier Roman pottery and, most notably, sherds from a Bronze Age vessel. Later features identified within the excavated areas are thought to be associated with a known 19th-century military hospital and surrounding military buildings.
