Description

Desk Based Assessment This desk-based assessment has been compiled in order to determine the impact on potential archaeological remains of a proposed development at Elvington airfield, York. It has been prepared to support a planning application to develop the area for domestic housing. In compiling this report it has become clear that the site could contain archaeological remains (in addition to the airfield itself), although the full potential of these remains is as yet uncertain. It is possible that if present they could be prehistoric to Romano-British in date although remains from later periods are possible. The known archaeological resources within the site comprise a probable Roman coin hoard (MYO238-40), an area of ridge and furrow (MYO2570) and the airfield itself (MYO3480). However, a number of sites, possibly of Iron Age/Romano-British date, lie to the north and south of the site. Furthermore, it is possible that a medieval site is present in the vicinity of Langwith House.
