Description

An archaeological evaluation comprising 94 trial trenches was carried out to assess the nature of the archaeological resource at Moor Lane, York. Two separate areas of enclosures dating to the Later Iron Age/Romano-British period were found within the site, both were well defined in extent. Other discoveries were primarily undated linear features; there was some suggestion in one area of the site that these might represent a system of field enclosures. Archaeologically significant activity appeared to be constrained to areas of higher – and presumably drier – ground, with lower lying areas containing only the undated features presumed to relate to agricultural activity. At the southern extent of the site the trial trenching also identified evidence relating to the formation of the Askham Bog glacial lake and raised mire sequence, including a thin horizon of organic material of potential Windermere Interstadial date. An Auger survey and palaeoenvironmental assessment was also carried out (EYO …. ) Site code: MOLY15.
