Description

In April 2001 York Archaeological Trust carried out an archaeological watching brief on two engineering test pits at the east end of St Denys Church, Walmgate, York. In Test-pit I the east wall of the church was seen to extend beyond the base of the trench at a depth of 2.15m, the walling was also seen to extend beyond the base of the shallower Test-pit 2. The reason for this unusual depth is not certain though may relate to either the wall lying above an earlier structure or to a feature internal to the church. An infant burial accompanied by two 19th century coins was also encountered in Pit 2. York Archaeological Trust annual report 36 30/2001-2002
