This Desktop Assessment has been prepared at the request of Mr Paul Chappell in support of an application for planning permission to create a fishing facility for the use of disable young people, on land to the south of Acomb Grange, Acomb, York The assessment indicates that the site of the proposed new pond lies along the medieval and post-medieval moat, which enclosed the Grange. Acomb Grange was owned, from the early 12 111 century to the Dissolution of the Monasteries, by St Leonard's Hospital, one of the most important establishments of its kind in the country. Acomb Grange was at times used as a residence for the Master of the Hospital, the best known ofwhich, Walter de Langton, was also Treasurer to the King. The excavation of the pond will cause the removal ofwell-preserved, organic deposits dating to the medieval and post-medieval periods. The extent and depth of these deposits is not fully understood. Therefore a programme offield evaluation is likely to be required, followed by an appropriate level of mitigation to maximise preservation in-situ of the remains and ensure that an adequate record of any deposits that have to be removed is undertaken. Any archaeological fieldwork undertaken on the site will provide an opportunity to include and inform the local community.
