An evaluation was undertaken at the site of the NCP car-park., It comprised nine 3x3m trenches, excavated to depths of between 0.52 and 2.0m below ground level. All trenches contained deep, well stratified deposits dating from the 11th to 16th century; only in Trench 4 were pre-Conquest remains found less than 2m below ground surface. Waterlogging occurred in all trenches bar Trench 4 - these trenches showed exceptional preservation of timber and organic materials. Most deposits were medieval, though there were residual finds of Roman, Anglian and Anglo-Scandinavian date - deposits below those excavated will probably be relatively undisturbed. More modern deposits appear to have been truncated during 20th century building construction.
