York Historic Environment Record

This appraisal provides an initial review of the archaeological potential of the remains discovered during redevelopment at the former North Eastern Railway Company Offices, Toft Green, York. These remains were spread throughout a number of trenches located at various points across the whole site area and included distinct archaeological trenching along with the monitoring of small-scale linear excavations for drains and other services. The remains unearthed on the site span many periods of the City’s development from the Romano British period, through the post Roman phase into the Medieval period and right through to the present day. These trenches revealed important evidence to further understanding of the sequence of urbanisation and changes in the organisation of land use through an extended period in the history of York. The report is an interim appraisal of the excavations and does not include plans or OD values. Presumably the funding for the post-excavation assessment work has not been forthcoming.
