Watching brief during the replacement of a Victorian sewer running the length of Parliament Street. It became apparent that the 19th century work had involved tunnelling between manholes cut from the surface meaning that considerable amounts of previously undisturned archaeological levels had to be removed during the replacement works. Walls, ditches and rubble were recorded. Evidence was insufficient to suggest Roman dates. Observation was not maintained over the trench closest to the fortress wall. The features noted did not indicate heavy Roman settlement or drastic alterations in natural topography. The area beneath 5-7 Parliament Street was excavated only to the top of the Anglo-Scandinavaian deposits produced unstratified posts and planks from timber buildings of 12th-13th century date.
