Description

Between January 27th and January 30th 2005 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief to the rear of 96 Holgate Road, York to monitor the groundworks for a new house. The site lay within an area known to have produced remains of archaeological significance in the past. Although the area disturbed by the machine-excavated trenches was quite limited a number of features were observed and recorded. Some of these were definitely or probably modem but at least one could possibly be a medieval robber trench for a substantial stone wall. Unfortunately no dating evidence was recovered from the watching brief to confirm this. However, the work did indicate that deposits and features of archaeolooical sionificance survive in this area. NMR Information: Monitoring of groundworks for a new dwelling recorded a possible medieval robber trench for a substantial stone wall.
