Description
Building, tesselated pavement only was revealed in the mid 19th century east of the junction of Cherry Street with Clementhorpe (NGR SE60325109 in RCHME).
An area 11feet by 8 feet representing about half the pavement was uncovered; damage had been caused by grave-digging and 2 ins of cement overlay it. Drawing were made but only a photograph of one of them survives in the Yorkshire Museum. The design was geometrical. No record was made of the building that contained the pavement. The site was on elevated ground.
This tesselated pavement (illustration reproduced in RCHMEvol 1 Eburacum (SYO …..) is the same tesselated pavement as that excavated in 1976-77 (EYO2346 to EYO2350), and subsequently lifted and reset for display in the Yorkshire Museum.
