Description

excavation, watching brief, trenches A series of trenches were dug to evaluate the archaeological significance of this site during the course renovations and structural strengthening of this building. In all of the trenches good stratigraphic evidence of an archaeological nature were recovered. This included structures, features and deposits of the Roman period and dated to between the 2nd and 4th centruries A.D. The structures were all thought to be that of stone built barrack blocks belonging to the Legionary fortress although below this some evidence for possible timber buildings having stood on this site during the 1st and 2nd century prior to the construction of the stone built barrack blocks. The barrack blocks that were observed displayed signs of at laest three phases of construction and sub-division, they were also found to contain hearths and very distinctive floor levels. Evidence for post Roman activity was limited as it was found that the construction of the buildings basement had removed all subsequent deposit layers. In one trench however, evidence for features dated to the 10th and 11th century were seen but was restricted to the area of trench 20 in the eastern corner of the site.Timbers which could have formed part of a building which may have dated to the Anglo-Scandinavian period were noted. This trench along with that of 4 did however reveal some evidence of a brick built post medieval structure predating that of the Chapel.
