Description

Two trenches were excavated and two boreholes were observed during the archaeological evaluation. Trench 1 produced late medieval, post-medieval and modern deposits extending to a depth of about 1.6 m. These deposits provided evidence of an early 19th century almhouse preceded by a probable garden.Trench 2 revealed a series of Roman features, including two ditches. Deposits above this level contained a garden soil and post-medieval brick culverts. The two boreholes and trenches indicates that the profile of the natural drift slopes more sharply than that of the present ground profile. According to this it seems that human derived deposits extends deeper at the property frontage (c 2.5 m) than at the rear of the site (c 1 m).
