Abstract/Summary
Ongoing work at the Guildhall complex has identified evidence for the natural topography with a steep slope towards the River Ouse. Roman occuapaiotn conisites of a series of metalled surface that may be a yard or truncated surfaces of the road to the Roman bridge crossing for the River Ouse. Medieval sequences suggest the area around the Guildhall was open land in this period suggested by the presence of horticultural soils. There is evidence for extensive dumping of material to raise the ground level prior to the construciton of the 19th century buildings
