Abstract/Summary

The Cobbled Road was in existence by the 1880s and the continued efforts of the Chapter to improve the views of the cathedral and environs of Minster Yard in the early nineteenth century suggest it was not unsurfaced. In the 1820s, permission for gas pipes and lamps to be installed included the requirement that paths and the road were made good. The cobbled surface originally extended further, perhaps as far as Chapter House Street. The present cobbled surface to the north-west of the junction with Chapter House Street was probably laid c.1972 when the Council provided setts for College Street.
