Abstract/Summary
An Archaeological Evaluation by Trial Trenching was carried out by MAP
Archaeological Practice Ltd at Del Monte, Skelton Park Trading Estate, Shipton Road,
Skelton, York between in August and September 2018. Commissioned by
Barratt/David Wilson Homes, the scheme was proposed to determine the potential
for archaeological remains below the former factory. This would allow the City of
York Council to make an informed decision on the impact of any remains by the
proposed development. Previous stages in the evaluation took the form of a Desk
Based Assessment in 2014. All work was undertaken in accordance with a Written
Scheme approved by The City of York’s archaeologist.
Eight trial trenches were excavated across the development area, of which six were
negative. Trenches 2 and 3, revealed limited archaeological remains that consisted
of linear ditch and a small pit. The pit found in Trench 3, had a number of sheep
bones present, but no dating. Excavation of the ditch from Trench 2 however,
recovered sherds of Late Bronze Age to Early Iron Age pottery from a single
segment, as well as some fire cracked stones and charcoals. This ditch was further
exposed to the south of Trench 2 and was found to become less formal more
sinuous in its form further south.
