In January and February 2017 York Archaeological Trust undertook a watching brief during the creation of a new bus shelter on Museum Street, York. The site location was immediately adjacent to the Scheduled Ancient Monument: CITY WALLS GATES POSTERNS, MOAT MOUNDS, BAYLE HILL, ST LEONARDS HOSPITAL, MERCHANT TAYLORS HALL, ALDWARK, YORK, NORTH YORKSHIRE Scheduled Monument No: SM YO 30, HA 1004910 The bus shelter was also designed to reinforce the structural footings of the St Leonards Hospital building that could be undermined during these works. The protection as a Scheduled Ancient Monument was also afforded to archaeological deposits, such as the Roman Rampart, in this area. It was anticipated that these would also be exposed and disturbed during the works. The resulting archaeological remains did not encounter the expected extensive remains of the medieval building and the Roman rampart; only traces of the fortress rampart and the extant foundations of the hospital survived. What was recovered gave new and significant information about the site, particularly the use of the area in the post-medieval period. These were a late medieval or more likely early post-medieval burial, a post-medieval burial, and structures alongside substantial 18th century clearance. The significance of these discoveries resulted in a new project post excavation assessment design being drafted and accepted by the City of York Council. The following report is the result of this stage of works.
