Formerly known as: Penn House BOOTHAM. Includes: No.68 BOOTHAM. House, No.68 Bootham now part of school. Mid C19 with some C20 alterations. White brick with sandstone dressings and slate roof. EXTERIOR: 3 storeys above a basement. The facade to St Mary's has pedimented outer bays and a slightly-recessed centre with an ashlar portico. The 1st and 2nd floor windows have sill bands and the pediments are linked by a stone gutter. The windows are mostly glazing bar sashes with rubbed brick flat arches. The ground-floor window opening of the left-hand bay has been bricked in with poorly-matching brickwork. The 1st floor window above is a blind sash with glazing bars. Above the portico the recessed centre has one main window on the 1st floor with a narrow sashed window to its right. Above, there are 3 windows to the 2nd floor. The portico has a plain entablature with cornice and blocking course and is supported by 4 columns with Ionic capitals, the volutes of the corner capitals set diagonally. The door has 6 panels and a plain overlight. Flanking lights are set between the pilaster responds. 2 chimneys are visible, to each side of the recessed centre and set back from the facade. The facade to Bootham is of 4 bays. The windows are glazing bar sashes, except for the 2nd and 3rd windows on the 1st floor, which are sashed. The right-hand bay contains a doorcase with 3 pilasters, the left-hand opening partly blocked and containing a window, and the right-hand opening containing a 6-panel door with overlight. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: both frontages have basement areas enclosed by iron railings on low ashlar walls and with ashlar piers of square plan with curved tops. The railings have bulb finials, and in front of the St Mary's facade they include iron gates, and standards with mushroom finials.
