Terrace of 7 houses, with garden railings, gates and gate posts attached to fronts. Early C19. Red-grey brick in Flemish bond, with timber doorcases; hipped slate roof with wrought-iron corner scrolls and brick stacks. Painted cast-iron railings, gates and gate posts. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 7-window front. Each house has a doorcase of slender fluted columns, some with capitals enriched with applied mouldings, beaded panelled friezes and flat cornice hoods. All doors, except that to No.2, are of 6 raised and fielded panels, and recessed, beneath overlight, in incised panelled reveals: No.2 has replacement glazed door. To left of door, all houses, except No.8, have a shallow 2-storey bay window, all except No.4 having 16-pane sashes with painted stone sills and beaded panelled friezes on both floors. No.4 has 8-pane replacement sashes, and No.8 has 12-pane sash with renewed sill and flat arch of gauged brick on first floor. 3 sets of rainwater goods with fluted bowl heads and fleur-de-lys clamps drain eaves guttering on paired modillions. Left return: 2-storey 2-window front, with 2-storey extension bay to left, raised above retaining wall and steps on north-east side of South Esplanade (qv) which forms basement. Two barred square openings in basement. Original windows are 16-pane sashes on both floors, those on ground floor in shallow bows. All have renewed sills, and those on first floor have flat arches of gauged brick. Extension is canted at corner and has 3 x 8-pane casement windows on both floors. INTERIORS: No.5 has moulded border to entrance hall ceiling, and round arch on pilasters to stairhall. No.7 retains original room and cupboard doors and architraves with paterae in most rooms: front room on ground floor has chimneypiece with reeded surround, floral paterae and cornice shelf. Staircase balustrade is of stick balusters with turned newel and flat moulded handrail. First floor front room retains original chimneypiece. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: garden railings on low brick walls with stone coping, garden gates and gate posts survive in part to all houses except No.5: only those to No.2 are complete. Railings, gate railings, gate posts and standards are turned, and standards and gate posts taper: railings have pointed tips, standards urn finials, and gate posts ball finials.
