Full Description

Inn, now house and shop. Mid C18, re-roofed in early C19; altered with shopfront mid C19. Painted brick in Flemish bond with timber doorcase and shopfront: hipped roof, part tile, part pantile, with corner scrolls, skylight and brick stacks.

EXTERIOR: 3-storey 1-window front. Shopfront of plain pilasters with moulded imposts and moulded cornice on paired brackets: glazed and panelled double doors beneath overlight on corner, between shop windows of 2 round-arched lights with transom over panelled risers. 1-pane sash windows with painted flat arches on first and second floors. First and second floor bands, returned over right front. Fluted inverted bell rainwater head. Right return to Merchantgate: 3 storeys, with cellar beneath right end; 3-window front. Cellar has board door. Central doorcase approached by steps has incised panelled jambs with entablature on carved consoles and glazed and panelled door beneath 6-pane overlight. Windows as on Walmgate front.

(520) House, No. 9, was built in the late 18th century. In 1850 it was The Black Horse p.h. and now contains a shop. It is a long narrow building of three storeys with its main frontage to Merchantgate. On plan two unequal rooms are disposed one on each side of the entrance hall and stairs.
