Full Description

NMR Information:

RR 81a Roman Road. York (Grimston) - Thornthorpe - Malton.
A road from York to the north-east forked out of RR 2e (LINEAR 272) at Grimston (SE 647 515) and is followed by the present road to Gate Helmsley although not straight, but generally direct, and keeping to high ground. Half a mile beyond Gate Helmsley there was another fork, the RR 81a continuing on the present road to Buttercrambe, which is straight and somewhat raised. The other road RR 810 (LINEAR 278) went through Stamford Bridge to Bridlington. Beyond Buttercrambe the RR 81a is followed by the present road to Gally Gap, passing west of Lippington (sic) and running in straight lengths. From this point onward to Malton the present road is very winding and should only be regarded as indicating the approximate course of the Roman road. At Thornthorpe, the RR 29 (LINEAR 287) joins and continues the line to Malton through the suburb of Norton. (1)
