The Kings of England minted coins at York in the reign of Athelstan, ca.927-939 and from 959-1066. (1)

Excavations at the Coppergate site have recovered the only known Early Mediaeval coin die, a hand held punch made of iron. This was recovered together with a lead strip which was clearly a testing strip since one of the `tests' had been punched in mirror-image. It is fairly certain that the Coppergate excavations have revealed the site of the York mint. (2)
