Summary
Possible shooting target markers or butts, of uncertain date, surviving as earthworks on Walmgate Stray. A series of four pairs of low mounds, regularly spaced 10m intervals, each around 3m long and 1.5m wide, may mark the positions of targets. Two further mounds of similar proportions downslope may be firing positions. The mounds directly overlie the faint furrows of Napoleonic narrow rig cultivation, so the possible range may be of 19th century date.

(SE 6141 5088) Possible shooting butts.
In 2004, English Heritage carried out an investigation and field survey at Level 3 standard of Walmgate Stray, as part of a national project to examine the heritage of England's urban commons (Event Record 1376159) (1).
A report including a full textual description and analysis accompanied by maps, plans and photographs is available from the National Monuments Record, together with the rest of the project archive material (reference number SE 65 SW 500). (1)
