Landscape record MYO4858 - Ornamental line of trees, Walmgate Stray

Summary

Ornamental line of trees, probably planted in the 1920s, running north to south on Walmgate Stray, parallel to the western boundary of The Retreat and the eastern boundary of Low Moor Allotments. The overhanging branches were reportedly used to provide camouflage for military vehicles dispersed from the nearby barracks during the Second World War. Two of the trees were used to support a rope walk that formed part of an army assault course in use until the late 1940s.

In late March 1999, RCHME carried out a Level 1 field investigation of the environs of Lamel Hill (SE 65 SW 25). The investigation identified the well preserved earthworks of an embanked line of trees extending for c.250m southwards from Lamel Hill, parallel to the western boundary of The Retreat and possibly replicating the reverse-S of medieval ridge and furrow cultivation ridges. A number of trees still stand along the course of the avenue, but not all are contemporary with the earthwork. (1)

In 2004, English Heritage carried out an investigation and field survey at Level 3 standard of Walmgate Stray as part of the national project to examine England's urban commons (Event Record 1376159) (2).

A full report including maps, plans, photographs, with textual description and analysis, together with the project archive material, is available from the National Monuments Record (reference number SE 65 SW 500). (2)
