Monument record MYO4686 - YORK CITY WALLS Tower 34
Summary
Layerthorpe Tower. It set on an angle with straight sides to the west and north and a curved face on the east and southeast. It is unusual in being without a solid base, rather veing supported on two buttresses, and between them to the east, a pointed arch of five orders. This arrangement may nave been due to soft ground near the River Foss. The curved part may have been a later alteration since Archer's plan of 1682 shows the tower as square in plan.
