Monument record MYO4182 - Compass

Summary

Compass, carved in stone, painted in blue, pink and red. Inscription on front reads "COME FROM THE FOUR WINDS O BREATH 1946". Inscription on the rear records CJ Minter, OBE, City Surveyor and B Brooks Clerk of Works. The compass was carved by workshop of Geo W Milburn, Sculptors. Remainder of inscription on rear is badly decayed. But partially legible. More research is required to find who else was involved and date and time of laying ceremony. The compass stone was restored in January 2009 by City of York Ancient Monuments Team (Geoof Newbold) when thecompass was lifted, broken fragments were pinned together and the reliefs repainted.

CJ Minter OBE was City Surveyor.

G. W. Milburn, 1834-1941, was born and worked in York; a student of the School of Art, his work is found in many parts of the county, in the cathedrals at York, Durham. Lincoln, Chester, Carlisle, and Rochester, and many churches. His stoneyard was for many years located on the site of the former coalyard, gents nad ladies public toilets, now cafe and public toilets, adjacent to Bootham Bar.
