Building record MYO3908 - 18-22 Lord Mayor's Walk

Summary

Early 19th century brick terraced two storey terraced brick buildings, converted for retail use on the ground floor. Pitched slate roofs. 2/2 sash window to first floor. 20 and 22 have an attic room. Identified as Buildings of Merit in the Historic Core Conservation Area Appraisal. Advertisement painted on the side elevation of no.18, indicating that: “Nightly BILE BEANS keep you Healthy, Bright-eyed and Slim”. Probably dates from the 1920s and is a local landmark. Nominated for inclusion on York's Local List of heritage assets as an example of early 20th century advertising and as a colourful and valued contribution to the local street scene. Surveyed December 2014: Generally described as a mixture of fair-good condition. No 18: in need of some repointing. Front downpipe is cast iron and leaks rest are UPVC. Flashing above shop window loose. No. 20: slight bowing to roof. Bricks to face of 20 and 22 are more modern than 18. (see attachments for further information). Shop fronts: Historic shopfronts. Date unknown. No18 older. Upper floors: No. 18 in use but unsure in what capacity. 20-22 residential.

Full Description

House, No. 18, was built c. 1840. The first-floor window has a stone lintel simulating an arch.

House, No. 24, has a pantiled roof.
