Monument record MYO369 - Moated site NETHER POPPLETON

Summary

The scheduled monument includes a medieval moated site, a sample of the surrounding medieval field system, a group of associated fishponds and part of the high status Anglo-Saxon settlement complex which preceded it. It lies immediately adjacent to the Church of St Everilda which itself had Saxon origins.

Full Description

FORMED A MANOR OF ST MARYS ABBEY YORK. IT IS WELL DEFIND AND DRY. A BANK EXISTS ADJACENT TO THE RIVER. NOTHING IS VISIBLE ON THE PLATFORM.

NMR Information:

SE 5634 5512 MOAT. [GT]. (1)
Resurveyed at 1:2500. A well-defined, rectangular, homestead moat,
now dry and in good state of preservation. No foundations are visible
on its platform. (2) Condition unchanged. (3) SE 564 552. Moated site. Scheduled No NY/1072. (4) A triangular fishpond lies to the east of the moat (at SE 5645 5520). (6)
