Full Description
(SE 5896 49323) In April 2011, information from a local enthusiast led to the identification of a possible enclosure of unknown date surviving as a degraded earthwork in rough pasture at the south-western edge of the Knavesmire Common. The location reportedly corresponds to that of a `boundary bank¿ recorded hereabouts in the 1930s (the source was not checked). The enclosure is perhaps roughly quadrangular in plan and some 60m in internal diameter, though only one of the corners survives well enough to be easily discernible. Where best preserved on the east side of the enclosure, the bank is about 4m wide and up to 0.3m high and the ditch of commensurate depth. The condition of the earthwork may be partly due to the nature of the soil here, which is almost pure sand in places; this also probably accounts for the presence of what appear to be shallow surface quarries in the interior.
A partial survey of the monument was carried out in January 2012 by Al Oswald (English Heritage) and Dringhouses Local History Group and members of various Community Archaeology Groups
