Monument record MYO2207 - Holgate Hill earthwork

Summary

Rectilinear earthwork marked on 1st Edition OS survey plan of 1853, now built over at Enfield Crescent. Excavation carried out in 1936 by Phillip Corder, reported in YAYAs Ann Report, 1951-2, pp31-5. In 1936 the summit of Holgate Hill was surrounded by a rectangular earthwork measuring some 148ft by 160ft. The excavator noted that the rampart of the earthwork overlay earlier broad ridge and furrow. The excavator suggested that the earthwork and occupation debris within may have related to the early 14th century and the 17th century Seige of York. Other excavated material and cartographic evidence suggests a windmill stood at the summit of Holgate Hill within this earthwork enclosure.

[SE 5896 5133] Intrenchment [O.E.] (1)

A rectangular earthwork consisting of a rampart 148 by 160 ft., around the summit of Holgate Hill 1/2 mile S.E. of Howe Hill, was excavated for the M.O.W. in 1936. Finds from the summit indicated occupation during the first half of the 14th century and there was slight evidence that the rampart dated from the same period. (2)

The earthwork has been destroyed by modern development. (3)

The site resembled a Civil War redoubt. (4)
