Vicarage, now lodging house; gate and railings attached to front. Late C19. Vicarage possibly by James Demaine; gate and railings probably by the Walker Foundry. MATERIALS: orange-red brick in English garden wall bond, banded with 2 courses of blue vitreous brick, and incorporating length of dressed stone wall at left end; brick plinth with chamfered stone plinth band, and window arches of gauged brick. Slate roof with stone copings, roll finials and shaped kneelers, and brick stacks. Front gate and railings of cast-iron, on brick wall. EXTERIOR: 2-storey 6-bay front, arranged 1:2:1:2, paired bays forming cross-gabled projections; left end bay blind. Between projecting bays, pointed arch of gauged brick contains 3 steps leading to recessed 4-panel door beneath 2-centred overlight. Cross-gabled bays have two 1-pane sash windows with painted stone sills on each floor. Ground floor windows have cambered heads beneath segmental arches; those on first floor have square heads beneath 2-centred arches, with sandstone tympana carved with chevron bands. First floor window over door has sandstone lintel similarly carved. Gable ends have sandstone panels carved with blind trefoils, beneath shaped arches. Ground and first floor sill and impost bands, and gable attic band. Left return: 2 storeys, right end bay polygonal, left end with 1 window, behind lean-to outbuilding; irregular fenestration. 4-panelled back door with overlight beneath cambered brick arch. On ground floor of polygonal bay is a full-height segment-headed 6-pane sash window, approached by stone steps; on first floor, a 4-pane sash; both have painted stone sills. First floor window in left end is 16-pane sash. On upper floor of outbuilding is pivoting window. INTERIOR: not inspected. SUBSIDIARY FEATURES: railings at front are square section with pointed tips, and set diagonally in brick wall with chamfered stone coping. Gate of similar railings between turned standards with bulb bases and ball finials. Forms a group with the Church of St Mary (qv). (Pace GG: Bishophill: York: York: 1974-: 5, 19).
