Full Description

Statue. Dated 1911. By GW Milburn. Stone. Life-size cloaked figure of the artist holding a palette and brush depicted standing before a badly defaced representation of Bootham Bar: raised on a tall pedestal with moulded cornice enriched with egg-and-dart mouldings. Plaque on the pedestal reads: "William Etty Born in York 1787 Elected Royal Academician 1828 Died 1849". In concert with other local and national figures, Etty was responsible for preventing the demolition of Bootham Bar in 1832.
