Full Description

House, now shop and offices. c1845-50. Brick with slate roof. EXTERIOR: 2 storeys. The former house (No.42) is of one bay. On the ground floor it has a window with opening casements below 2 square panes with margin lights. On the 1st floor there is a casement window. At the right there is a doorcase with panelled pilasters, console brackets, a cornice, and panelled reveals. The C20 door has 6 raised and fielded panels, and there is a plain rectangular overlight. To the right there is a glazing bar sash window on the 1st floor above a timber shopfront. This has a continuous entablature with a dentilled cornice, and pilasters with sunken panels. 2 pilasters face Holgate road, and a window set across the corner angle at the right probably replaces a door. The shopfront continues on the right-hand return wall facing Mount Ephraim, where it has 4 pilasters. On the 1st floor above there are 3 glazing bar sashes: the right-hand one has 2 over 6 panes. Shared ridge chimney to left of No.42, with 2nd chimney to right in front of ridge. INTERIOR: not inspected. (RCHME: City of York: London: 1972-: 126).
