Description

Project designed to map and analyse archaeological evidence represented on aerial photographs from an area of Vale of York centred on city of York. SAME AS EYO4440 The Vale of York project was started under the auspices of the RCHME and continued, after merger, under English Heritage. It forms part of the National Mapping Programme (NMP) and was undertaken by the Aerial Survey section in the York office. It was started in January 1998 and completed in December 2000. The area comprises 67, 1:10000 Ordnance Survey maps, or 1675 square kilometres and adjoins two other NMP areas, the Howardian Hills and Yorkshire Wolds projects. The project area lies within the counties of North Yorkshire, East Riding of Yorkshire, York Unitary Authority and small parts of West Yorkshire and North Lincolnshire. The aims of the project were to interpret and transcribe, at a scale of 1:10000, all archaeological features visible on air photographs, dating from prehistory to the twentieth century, including industrial and military sites. The 1:10000 transcriptions are available as overlays and as digital files, which are held in the NMRC archive in Swindon (Parent Collection Number: 1128308) and copies are also held in the York office. Data was input to NewHIS database and the Aerial Survey Recording Module. A full description of the aims, methodology, sphere of interest and products is set out in the project specification and management report.Research topics were presented at the Vale of York Dayschool on 19 May 2001 and papers from that conference will be published in due course.
