The inner walkway investigation point A was situated approximately 20m north-east of Tower 23. Here a single paving slab, measuring 1.00 x 0.65m and 55mm thick was lifted. Below was a 120mmthick compacted, black, coarse sandy bedding material. The bedding material overlay small to medium sized limestone fragments bonded with a light yellow lime mortar. The inner walkway investigation point B was situated approximately 35m north-east of point A and approximately 20m south-west of Tower 24. Here two paving slabs, one measuring 0.8 x 0.5m and 55mm thick, and the other 0.3 x 0.3m and 55mm thick were lifted. Below was a 100mm thick compacted, black, coarse sandy bedding material. The bedding material overlay small to medium sized limestone fragments bonded with a light yellow lime mortar. The stretch of the city wall’s inner walkway between Bootham Bar and Robin Hood’s Tower (Tower27) was constructed as part of restoration work carried out in 1888-9. The type and appearance of materials observed during the inspection correspond with the construction date of this element of the city walls.
